Temperance, to help us fight all excess!

Temperance, also called Abstinence or Self Control, is another Virtue that acts in our will. This moral rectitude is very important to practice, because it helps us to moderate our desires for pleasure and for pleasant things.

The world contains all kinds of things we might find irresistible, although we know we should not have them, for they can cause damage to our soul. Self Control helps us to turn away from the attractive things we should shun, because they might be a danger for our salvation.

If we practice abstinence we can combat Gluttony, the Vice of being over-indulgent! Being a temperate person means we can exercise control over our emotions, desires and passions. For example: we will not allow ourselves to abuse of alcohol nor food or any other excess..

If we are people who can practice self-control, we can stay in control of our inner-feelings.. Doing this we can live well, thus in righteousness and love.

“ The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.- Proverbs 17:27
