When we offer a Communicant our First Communion Gifts, we express the joy we feel for this child. Receiving the Lord for the first time in your heart is indeed a day to remember. The Holy Scriptures show us that Holy Communion has been instituted by Jesus himself.
Matthew 26:26-28 tells us how Jesus took bread, blessed it and broke it. Then He gave it to His disciples telling them to take it and eat. Jesus explained the disciples that the bread was His Body.
Afterwards he took the cup of wine and told them to drink from it, telling them it was His Blood. And then He spoke these so important words:" This Blood of mine is shed for many for the remission of sins".
We Catholics make our First Holy Communion when we are seven to eight years old. In some countries up to nine years. According to the teachings of the Church is this the age they can reason. Thus they can understand what they are going to do when they receive the Holy Eucharist for the first time. The First Communion is the Second Sacrament of Initiation for a Catholic.
One week before receiving the Body of Christ for the first time, the child or adult entitled to receive Holy Communion goes to confession. This is a Sacrament known as the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance. We cannot receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion if we have not received the Sacrament of Baptism first.
There is another rule to be observed before receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. We must fast at least one hour before receiving this Sacrament. This is also valid for the rest of the times in our life when we receive Communion!
The greatest Miracle ever happens during the celebration of the Eucharist: the Transubstantiation! In Roman Catholic Theology this means the change of the substance of bread and wine into the substance of the Body and Blood of Christ!
Giving First Communion Gifts really shows our children that we support them in their Catholic life. Family and friends can also intensify this by being a part of the celebration and bringing their own Communion Gifts.
If our children have understood the mystery of Transubstantiation, then there is big reason to celebrate! We can express how happy we are for them by inviting friends and relatives to celebrate with us this very special day in the life of all practicing Catholics.
There are so many First Communion Gifts to choose for such a blessed occasion.
